Non specific vaginitis Other names Anaerobic vaginosis, Gardnerella vaginitis bacterial vaginosis. Cause Bacteria - Anaerobic bacteria and/or Gardnerella vaginalis. Transmission Probably sexual. Distribution Worldwide. Incubation Uncertain. Symptoms  Grey or yellow discharge associated with a fishy smell, especially after sex. Mild itching of burning. No symptoms. Diagnosis Microscopic examination of secretions. Amine (sniff) test. Treatment Antibiotics such as metronidazole and ampicillin by mouth. Complications Undetermined. Comments The main characteristic of the dischargeis its fishy smell which at times be off-putting and embarrassing. Males rarely develop symptoms and are normally only  treated if the female sex partner continue to suffer from  recurrent attacks.
